Blue Iris, a new boutique hotel opened last summer on Nantucket USA, with Portuguese tiles, in interior design.

The Story

"In the late 1800s, an art collector settled into a Greek Revival vacation estate in the heart of Nantucket. A Patroness of the Arts, she fondly welcomed neighbors and travelers for intimate gatherings on her garden patio and invited local artists to use her home as their studio. We designed our House to reflect her love for the seaside, rustic Mediterranean design, and Portuguese art.”

Inspired by the story, each room of Blue Iris Hotel is adorned with layered and patterned textiles, rustic Mediterranean elements, and antique details influenced by Portuguese design.

Tile Passion, developed the design and hand painted the tile mural that integrates the hotel's lush outdoor patio.

Based on this decor concept with the influence of the blue and white of Portuguese tiles, we were asked by the interior designers team of life House hotels, responsible for the decoration of the new hotel, to develop a bespoke project for a mural for the patio designed with classic elements of Portuguese tiles.

The motifs represented in the tile panels have as their main characteristic the mixture of different themes, as in this  Hotel tile panel:

 - "Albarrada" Floral motif with vase, where the blue iris flower, which gives the hotel its name, was integrated, with the hotel’s namesake flower, the Blue Iris.

- Dragons

- bucolic landscape in the background, to give depth

- Framed with foliage and flowers.

Based on characteristic elements of the Portuguese tile murals, in this panel elements of the flora and fauna of Nantucket were integrated, in a harmonious way."
